Little Known Facts about Branson

Branson is more than just a family-friendly destination that you can visit in any season. Here are some fun facts about this wonderful city:

  • The city was named after businessman and postmaster Reuben Branson.

Reuben Branson put up a general store and post office in the city in 1882. The city, located in Taney County, was formerly known as “Lucia.” Branson was formally incorporated in 1912.

  • Its two famous lakes, Taneycomo and Table Rock, are both man-made.

Both lakes were carved out of Branson’s White River. Lake Taneycomo was formed with the completion of Powersite Dam; it takes its name from “Taney County, MO.”

Table Rock Lake, on the other hand, was created after the construction of the Table Rock Dam. Apart from hosting water sports like jet skis and parasailing, they also make for good fishing. Table Rock Lake is known for bass and crappie, while Lake Taneycomo is famous for both brown and rainbow trout.

  • Before being an entertainment destination, Branson was known for “The Shepherd of the Hills.”

Harold Bell Wright’s 1907 novel about the Ozark Mountains prominently features Branson. An outdoor play based on the novel was first staged in Branson in 1960, and it continues to this very day. For this show alone, the production uses more than 20 horses, donkeys, mules, and sheep!

  • Branson has more theater seats than Broadway, New York City.

Home to around 50 theater venues and 57,000 theater seats, Branson isn’t referred to as the Live Entertainment Capital of the World for nothing. These theaters are conveniently located near several Branson resorts, so you can treat yourself to mind-blowing stage entertainment at any time!

  • Branson and the surrounding areas inspired the TV show “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

The show’s creator, Paul Henning, was on a Boy Scout trip to the Ozarks when he got the idea for the Beverly Hillbillies (1962-1971).  Branson served as the location of the Clampett family’s original home before moving to Beverly Hills, California. Henning would later donate 1,534 acres of land to the Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area—one of Branson’s renowned hiking destinations.

  • Silver Dollar City, an 1880s theme park, is home to several genuine artisans.

Opened in 1960 by the Herschend Family, Silver Dollar City is a recreation of an American frontier town. It originally had five shops, a church, and a log cabin. Artisans are present in the park the whole year; they include  wood carvers, glass blowers, potters, and a blacksmith. Silver Dollar City also has Outlaw Run, the only wood coaster with a double barrel roll with three upside down twists!
